Redbourn sits four miles from the salon, and its dogs tend to arrive having genuinely used their weekend. Grooming by Ilona's calm, one-to-one salon is based in Harpenden — around 10-15 minutes' drive from Redbourn.
Redbourn is a working-dog village as much as a commuter one. Spaniels, labradoodles, terriers and gundogs come off the Common and the surrounding farmland wet, muddy and coat-heavy, and by the time they reach a groomer the knots are already set. The instinct in a busy salon is to clip out at the first sign of resistance because it is quicker. Here the coat is assessed first and worked through where it can be saved, with an honest conversation if it cannot.
Around 4 miles west — approximately 10-15 minutes by car. Parking available near the salon.
Only one dog in the salon at a time. No cages, no cage dryers, no rushed handovers.
Grooming, puppy programme, senior comfort grooming and Emmi-Pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning under one roof.
Dried mud behaves like a binding agent: it locks the undercoat together and turns a loose tangle into a solid mat within days. Rinsing at home rarely reaches the base of the coat. Every groom starts with two warm baths using natural shampoo precisely so the coat is properly clean to the skin before any drying or cutting happens — drying a coat that is still dirty is what sets matting in place.
Working spaniels, labradors and their crosses are not styled like show dogs here. Feathering is tidied rather than sculpted, ears and pads are cleared out, hygiene areas are trimmed, and the coat is left with enough length to do its job in cold, wet fields. The aim is a dog that is comfortable and easy to keep clean, not one that looks like a catalogue photo for a fortnight.
Redbourn dogs benefit more than most from a wash and tidy between full grooms — a bath, hand blow dry and light trim to reset a coat that has taken a battering. It costs less than a full groom, takes less time on the table, and for a dog out on the Common most days it is usually the difference between a manageable coat and a clip-off in spring.
Two warm baths with natural shampoo, hand blow dry, brush-out, breed-specific cut, nail trim, ear clean and hygiene tidy. No cage dryers.
