Wheathampstead is the closest village to the salon, and for many local owners Grooming by Ilona has simply become the default groomer. Grooming by Ilona's calm, one-to-one salon is based in Harpenden — around 8-12 minutes' drive from Wheathampstead.
At three miles, Wheathampstead clients are not travelling for convenience — the village has options closer to home. They come for continuity. The same person grooms your dog every visit, remembers the ticklish spots, knows which dogs prefer to lie down for drying, and can tell when a coat has changed since last time. That kind of familiarity is impossible in a rota-based salon, and it is what keeps a nervous dog calm on the table.
Around 3 miles west — approximately 8-12 minutes by car. Parking available near the salon.
Only one dog in the salon at a time. No cages, no cage dryers, no rushed handovers.
Grooming, puppy programme, senior comfort grooming and Emmi-Pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning under one roof.
Nomansland is heathland, gorse and bracken, and it shows up in the coat. Burrs and grass seed work into ear feathering, armpits and between the pads, and by late summer they are the single most common thing found on the table. Every groom includes a full check of the pads, ears and undercarriage, and anything embedded is removed before bathing rather than washed further in.
Because the drive is short, Wheathampstead clients tend to keep to a regular interval — typically six to eight weeks for a doodle or spaniel, ten to twelve for a shorter coat — and book the next appointment before leaving. Regular dogs need less time on the table, cope better with the process, and almost never reach the point where clipping short is the only safe option.
The village has a lot of long-standing dogs, and senior comfort grooming was built for them. Sessions are shorter, broken into rest periods, and worked around arthritis, deafness or poor balance. Standing time is kept to a minimum, and if a dog has had enough on the day the groom is finished at whatever stage is comfortable rather than pushed to completion.
Two warm baths with natural shampoo, hand blow dry, brush-out, breed-specific cut, nail trim, ear clean and hygiene tidy. No cage dryers.

Extra time and rest breaks for older, nervous or medically sensitive dogs. Comfort-based handling throughout.
Anaesthesia-free Emmi-Pet ultrasonic cleaning for mild to moderate tartar. Silent, vibration-free and comfortable.
